Clark athletic report 11/17

A look back and ahead at what’s happening in Clark College athletics:

VOLLEYBALL

Notable: Clark players named South Region all-stars included Meghan Turner (first team) and Janessa Mast (second team).

This week: Clark (20-14) will face Walla Walla (27-18) in the first round of the NWAC Championships at 2 p.m. Thursday in Tacoma. Clark will then play either Shoreline (25-10) or Pierce (15-17) at 12:30 p.m. Friday in a quarterfinal or 8:15 p.m. Friday in a losers bracket match. The season-ending tournament runs through Sunday.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Season opens Friday: Not since the 1996 season have the Penguins opened as the defending NWAC champions. They begin at 8 p.m. Friday at Tacoma. Clark returns four players from last year’s roster: Bryan Berg (14.2 points/game, No. 2 in NWAC in 3-point field goals in 2014-15), Miles Martin, Darrius Mathis and Myles Springer (red shirt). Joining the team of local interest are Micah Paulson (Union grad, Columbian all-region player of the year, AP all-state) and Chad Love (Columbia River grad). (Click here for complete roster)

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Season opens Friday: Clark begins with the Yakima Valley Tip-Off Tournament at 4 p.m. Friday against Walla Walla. The Penguins will face either Whatcom or Treasure Valley on Saturday, and the event concludes Sunday. Clark has four sophomores on its roster, all returning players from last year’s NWAC Tournament team: Sydney Moore (Columbia River grad), Caylee Newsom (13.5 points/game), Bryn Tennyson and Megan Pyles. Assisting head coach Al Aldridge is former Penguins player Nicolette Bond, a Battle Ground grad. (Click here for complete roster)

CROSS COUNTRY

Notable: James Breen became the first Clark men’s runner to win the NWAC championship. Teammate Sam Garvin placed seventh, and both earned All-American status. The Clark women place third as a team will all its runners finishing in the top 25. Clark coach Bob Williams was named NWAC women’s cross country coach of the year.

MEN’S SOCCER

Notable: Clark players named North-South Region all-stars included forward Justin Linn, midfielders Octavio Hermosillo and Damian Garcia, defenders Gustavo Torres and Alec Lohr.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Notable: Clark players named North-South Region all-stars included forward Brenna Bogle, midfielder Megan Fox, defenders Hope Taylor and Emily Heaton.
