State patrol warns of phone scam; callers posing as agency

The Washington State Patrol has received multiple reports from people saying they’ve received calls soliciting donations for the agency, and the state patrol said in a news release these calls are a scam.

The public should be suspicious of any calls from anyone soliciting money on behalf the agency or asking for credit card numbers or personal financial information over the phone, the agency said. If you suspect it is scam, hang up and contact a local state patrol office.

The agency added the Washington State Patrol Troopers Association, like other police unions, does solicit the public for donations at times, but the union’s telemarketing company doesn’t use “hard sell tactics” and won’t ask for credit card numbers or financial information over the phone. Troopers will never call about donations.

More information on legitimate solicitors or charitable organizations operating in the state can be found at the Washington Secretary of State’s website.
