Prep volleyball: Prairie avoids elimination to clinch berth to 3A state

The Prairie volleyball team needed two wins on Saturday if it wanted its season to continue.

The Falcons got just that as they defeated Shelton and North Thurston in loser-out matches at the 3A bi-district tournament in Auburn to clinch a berth to the 3A state tournament next weekend in Kennewick.

Prairie first topped Shelton 3-0 (25-21, 25-13, 25-11), and then beat North Thurston in the winner-to-state match 3-1 (25-20, 18-25, 25-15, 25-22).

Prairie became the sixth seed as the Falcons lost to Enumclaw 3-2 in the fifth-place match.

Columbia River, which had clinched its spot to state on Friday, won the bi-district title with a thrilling 3-2 win over Kennedy Catholic.

Scores were 25-19, 23-25, 25-21, 19-25, 15-10.

Columbia River reached the final with a 3-0 win over Auburn Mountainview in the semifinal.

The draw for the state tournament will be announced Sunday by the WIAA.

4A bi-district

Eastlake of Sammamish ended Camas season with a 3-2 win at a state play-in match at Sammamish.

No other details were reported.

2A district

Ridgefield finished as runner-up to Tumwater in the 2A district tournament at Tumwater, falling to the Thunderbirds 3-1.

Ridgefield will be joined at state by fellow 2A Greater St. Helens League team Woodland, which placed third at district.

Woodland, which lost to Tumwater 3-0 in the semifinal, topped Hockinson for third place, 3-1. Scores were 26-24, 25-17, 22-25, 25-12.

Hockinson was eliminated. The Hawks had lost to 3-0 to Ridgefield in the semifinal.

1A district

Kalama won the district title, defeating King’s Way Christian, in four games 25-22, 25-20, 20-25, 25-16 at Castle Rock.

Both teams had already clinched berths to state.

Montesano dashed La Center’s state hopes with a 3-0 win over the Wildcats in the third-place match.

Earlier, La Center eliminated Seton Catholic in four games, 25-13, 25-23, 25-27, 32-30.
