A woman driving a Buick accidently backed into a Vancouver house Friday afternoon, damaging the garage, according to the Vancouver Police Department.

The 69-year-old was backing out of her driveway across the street when her car shot across the street, hitting a mailbox and a parked car before driving through some arbor vitae and striking the corner of the two-story house, according to Vancouver police spokeswoman Kim Kapp.

Police and firefighters were dispatched to the house in the Northcrest neighborhood, 6118 Montana Lane, at 12:24 p.m., where they found the car lodged into the corner of the garage.

Vancouver Fire Department Battalion Chief Lee Hazelton said that nobody was injured, and that since the house is vacant, they weren’t going to stabilize the structure.

Although he’s seen cars that have hit houses head-on, Hazelton wasn’t sure if he’s ever seen a car that backed into a house.

Patti Brockman said she just finished remodeling the house and was going to rent it out at the end of the month, but those plans have been postponed.

Vancouver police took a collision report but didn’t cite the driver, who wasn’t apparently impaired.

“It’s going to be an insurance issue,” Kapp said.
