Letter: Divisiveness is optional

The Columbian
Published: March 9, 2015, 12:00am

“In God We Trust.” Saying it hasn’t made it so, nor has printing it on money. Never will. Not for the nonbeliever, not for the believer. I oppose posting this motto in public places because it sows divisiveness and hypocrisy. But we, the people, don’t have to water and fertilize those seeds.

Councilors David Madore and Tom Mielke executed a decision to post the motto, but we can turn this circus into celebrations of unity in diversity — E pluribus unum — by refusing to let ourselves be divided and ill-willed toward one another. We can turn this travesty into an opportunity to exercise our own powers of tolerance and forgiveness. Because in the end, in spite of our disagreements about what will bring it about, we all want what is best for all. Would that we would trust each other. Any God worth the name would approve of that.
