Letter: Govern instead of preaching

The Columbian
Published: March 2, 2015, 12:00am

I’m a member of the silent majority, not the Ronald Regan type, an independent and contrarian, a person of faith (didn’t say which kind) and of Scottish/Irish-Norwegian stock, all stubbornly independent types. I’m free, white and way over 21. No one decides what’s best for me, but me. I’m a law-abiding person, and before you ask — just as much of a patriot as you believe you are.

Councilors Tom Mielke and David Madore: Don’t force your beliefs down my throat; that just makes me more stubborn and contrary. They may think they know what’s best for this county because we aren’t smart enough to think for ourselves. There’s lots of people out here who don’t “cotton” to their way of thinking and “governing.”

Born and raised in south-central Oklahoma, I saw and heard my share of tent preachers who espoused hell, fire and brimstone in their messages. I put Mielke and Madore both in that same pulpit. They’re the laughing stock of the whole West Coast. I don’t imagine either of them will ever see this since they’ve determined The Columbian is off limits and wouldn’t soil their hands by picking one up and reading it.
