As an avid bike rider, I am concerned about the bike lanes in Vancouver, especially along Padden Parkway, 164th Avenue, Fourth Plain, Andresen, 76th Avenue and 192nd Avenue. I believe that the city wants more people to bike to work or for recreation, but the question I have is who is responsible for keeping these bike lanes clean?
If you ride around the city, you will see that the lanes have quite a bit of debris in them — anything from rocks, dead animals, nails, screws, tools, bottles, cans, etc. The lanes are not that wide anyway, and as a rider, you have to pay attention to where you are headed and sometimes that means that you need to make quick movements to avoid hitting this debris. This can cause a rider to have to go into the traffic lane or take the chance of riding over this debris. Accidents can happen, and blown tires could also cause a rider to have to enter the lane of traffic.
How often do they clean these bike lanes? There needs to be a website that we can access to let the city know about the lanes that are needing to be cleaned.
