YAKIMA, Wash. (AP) — A Yakima man who pleaded guilty to shooting a man in a motel in 2013 has been sentenced to 31 1/2 years in prison.
The Yakima Herald-Republic reports (http://is.gd/DE4PXn ) that a Yakima County Superior Court judge chastised 23-year-old Angel Venegas Jr. for his long criminal history Tuesday, saying all he has to show for his life were convictions for child molestation, assault and now second-degree murder.
Venegas pleaded guilty in May to shooting Joshua Mathis, of Prosser, in the parking lot of a Red Apple Inn in Yakima.
Speaking at his sentencing, Venegas said prosecutors and the victim’s family spread “libel” about him and did not acknowledge his potential to better himself. He said he would work to better himself in prison and would not offend again.
