A woman who was driving along Northeast Marine Drive has died after her vehicle left the road and plunged into the Columbia River.
The accident was reported at 7:31 p.m. Wednesday in the 8500 block of Marine Drive, which is near the east end of Portland International Airport.
A witness reported seeing a vehicle veer off the road and plunge down the embankment and into the river. Portland firefighters arrived to see the car’s headlights shining underneath the water about 25 feet from shore.
They used a rescue boat to recover the vehicle and the body of the driver, a woman in her 40s. Her name was not released.
An autopsy will be performed to see if she drowned or perhaps had a medical problem.
