Weather Eye: Saturday may have been first dry day in our soggy December

The weather finally settled down for Christmas Day but still dropped measurable rainfall in the early morning hours keeping our wet streak alive. Saturday, however, as of 5 p.m., no rain in the bucket! Our streak may have ended at 25 days.

An incoming storm will give us more precipitation but wasn’t expected to begin until after midnight so Saturday may have been our first dry day of the month. December rainfall stood at an amazing 15.36 inches, 10 inches above average. We will add to that today and Monday, but forecast charts look dry after Wednesday through the weekend. Probably won’t hit 16 inches.

Maybe a snow surprise this morning? Cool and dry east winds were blowing out of the Gorge on Saturday, and with the weak weather system this morning not pushing any warm air up from the south, I wouldn’t be surprised if everyone saw some snow in the air. Maybe a couple inches above 500 feet and a dusting on bark dust, lawns, car tops etc. at the lowest city levels. It would be short-lived.

Many households in Clark County woke up Christmas Day with snow on the ground. Mostly above 1,000 feet but some as low as 750 feet.

Looking ahead, experts are predicting that January and February will be drier and warmer than average as El Ni?o kicks in and the storm track stays to our south with a weaker storm track to our north. Beginning New Year’s Eve, we most likely go into an inversion with cold conditions, some fog and light winds here at lower elevations. Clear sunny weather and mild weather will dominate the upper elevations.

Enjoy any snowflakes that may be in the air today, and we will chat on Tuesday!
