Firefighters spent hours on the scene of a fire that spread into two stories of an unoccupied home in Hockinson.

Crews from Clark County Fire District 3 were called to 16710 N.E. 182nd Ave. just after 3 p.m. Saturday for a report of a chimney fire, Battalion Chief Jeff Stewart said.

Arriving crews found that there was fire in the wall and worked to find the source and its extension, staying on scene for about two hours, Stewart said. The damage, he said, was contained to two stories of wall.

“In balloon constructed homes, when fire gets in the wall, there are no fire stops,” Stewart said. “Fire is difficult to locate and very difficult to extinguish. We spent a lot of time searching for heat.”

The residence—which Stewart said is old dairy – was built in 1920 and is no longer habitable, according to Stewart and Clark County property records. It is owned by Frank Huntington who has a different mailing address.

Stewart said the fire is likely electrical in nature, but that is under investigation by the Clark County Fire Marshal’s Office.
