SEATTLE — The King County Council has approved 12 weeks of paid parental leave for county employees.

KING-TV reports that the legislation approved Monday calls for a one-year pilot program that allows mothers and fathers to take the time off. But employees would have to use all but a week of their vacation and sick pay in order to be considered for the program.

King County is the latest to join a number of other big employers in the region to increase their paid parental leave programs. Microsoft, Amazon, the Gates Foundation and the City of Seattle have all increased paid leave for parents.
