Letter: Help homeless with more shelters

How many homeless do you think there are in Clark County alone? There are nearly 700. In 2014, there were 30 families and this year there are 29 families homeless. Where do these people stay? There are still people who have to live on the streets. People have nowhere to go when the weather is harsh. What if it were someone you cared about?

Some reasons for how people become homeless is by losing a job or by not being paid enough. The federal minimum wage is $4,710 (annually) under the poverty line. Many shelters are full before these people can get to them. Those who are left out in weather suffer through the night and can become ill, leading to death.

We need to help the homeless, and several solutions are already in progress. Skate for Change is an organization that gives out necessities to the homeless. Another solution is creating a place to stay during winter months. Another solution is creating a shelter where they could use computers and apply for jobs online instead of holding out signs for others to see. Volunteering a portion of your day helps more than you think. Opening up more shelters would improve several people’s lives.
