You hardly can find anyone more local and committed to working in Clark County than Tom Hughes. Having worked at Orchards Feed Mill for 23 years, he has seen the landscape of Clark County change and, with that, the focus of the store’s retail business. It now caters to the hobby and urban farmer alongside the store’s lifelong customers, who still come to buy livestock feed and fencing. “I’m proud to work in Clark County,” says Hughes.

Name: Tom Hughes.

Residence city: Amboy.

Employer: Orchards Feed Mill, 10902 N.E. Rosewood Ave., Vancouver. 360-892-3001. www.orchardsfeed.com

Age: 53.

Educational/professional background: After graduating from Ridgefield High School I worked at a local feed store loading trucks and waiting on customers before joining Orchards Feed in 1992 as the store manager. I’d grown up on a farm playing around with horses and doing farm stuff. It’s the life I’ve always had.

Personal/business philosophy: Give good customer service. We’ve been able to expand from 3,700 to 17,000 square feet of retail space because we’ve changed from offering just livestock feed to all kinds of food and supplies for pets, chickens, rabbits, wildlife, and so on. We advise and help hobby farmers and those who are new to raising farm animals.

One thing you’d like people to know about your work? How many different things we sell.

Most rewarding part of job: Helping people with their pets and livestock problems.

Most challenging part of job: Staying competitive with the Wal-Marts of the world.

Best feature of your Clark County community: The history and heritage of the area.

What would make your community a better place? More independent retailers than box stores.

Your favorite travel destination: I took a vacation in Mexico this year with my family. What a great time!

Favorite restaurant/pub/coffee shop/store: Nick’s in Amboy.

Hobbies: Fishing, working on my farm and with my racehorses. I got into racing about four to five years ago and go to the track about every other week. I have a trainer who works with the four or five horses I raise at my stables, Spotted Dog Ranch. Our horses race at Emerald Downs in Seattle and at Portland Meadows.

Most enjoyable book/play/movie/arts event in past 12 months: I don’t have time for any!

One word to describe yourself: Loyal.
