Editor’s note: The Columbian is following the progress of two Southwest Washington men attempting to through-hike the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail the 2,650 miles from Mexico to Canada. Updates are provided as they become available:

o Anthony Mannello, 27, of Vancouver, has crossed the Bridge of the Gods at Cascade Locks, completing Oregon and heading north into Washington. He reported in via his blog on Monday.

Mannello had breakfast with his family and a friend at Timberline Lodge.

“I hiked the last 40 miles of the trail in one day, eager to see the Bridge of the Gods and get a well-earned beer or two….”I am not addicted to the high-mileage days, like some, but such familiar trail I knew I could make it.”

News of forest fires in the Glacier Peak area of northern Washington are on his mind. Trail closures require a 100-mile detour with a long road walk.

“I will continue to prepare for Washington and hope for the best ahead. All I can do now is hike.”
