A fire in a basement of a Rose Village house was caused by smoking materials, Vancouver Fire Marshal Heidi Scarpelli said.

Crews responded to the blaze, reported just before 10 p.m. Thursday at 3001 N St., keeping the damage to the structure at about $7,000, she said.

“Firefighters made an incredible stop before heavy damage could take place,” Scarpelli said.

The fire originated in a recliner in the basement and was caused by improper use of smoking materials, Scarpelli said.

“To prevent a deadly cigarette fire, you have to be alert,” she said.
