Ridgefield — There are lots of youth soccer summer camps out there, but Ridgefield High School’s four-day camp in late August is a little different. A few years ago, it became clear that the same campers who “didn’t want to pay attention to the coaches at all,” were “enamored with the female players who were helping us run the camp,” said head coach Robby Trimbo. Ever since then, the high school players themselves have organized and run the camp, which continues to grow in popularity. Trimbo said they expected 20, but 67 campers showed up this past summer. Supervising the 4-to-13-year-olds reminded senior soccer player Courtney Zumstein of her own start watching high school soccer: “I loved coming to the stadium and watching the high school girls play. We wanted to offer that same sort of experience for girls and boys in the area who might have the opportunity to get out there and play soccer,” she said.
