PORTLAND — At a time when many independent bookstores are closing, Powell’s Books in Portland is investing $1 million in a remodel.

In addition to improvements such as a new front entrance and skylights, the work will upgrade the former car dealership to modern earthquake and safety codes.

KGW reports about 150,000 books had to be moved elsewhere in the store for the six-month remodel. The store remains open during the work and plans a rededication in August.

Powell’s Books calls itself the largest independent used and new bookstore in the world.
