Veterans in need will be able to find immediate assistance and access some long-term services Wednesday in the annual stand-down.

The Clark County Veterans Assistance Center is organizing the event, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Armed Forces Reserve Center, 15005 N.E. 65th St.

More than 40 service providers will be at the event, including veterans groups and local organizations whose representatives can discuss housing assistance, employment services and counseling.

There also will be staffers from government agencies, said Nick Herber, this year’s stand-down director.

The Portland Veterans Affairs Medical Center will have representatives from about 10 different departments who will be able to discuss specific health topics and help vets access the full range of VA benefits, Herber said.

“We even got a call this year from the state attorney general’s office,” Herber said. The office has resources to assist both veterans and current military service members.

Veterans will be able to get on-site health and dental screenings. They also will be able to pick up clothing, sleeping bags, backpacks and other military-surplus supplies.

The Clark County Veterans Assistance Center is teaming with a couple of other regional stand-downs on a bulk order for those supplies, which are provided by the Defense Department, Herber said. “We also are ordering for the stand-down in Longview and a new one that will be held in Aberdeen,” he said. The three sites could distribute more than 300 sleeping bags and backpacks in total, he said.

A lunch will be served.

Organizers from the Clark County Veterans Assistance Center estimate that at least 150 veterans attended the 2013 stand-down.

“Not all got registered,” Herber said.

The veterans assistance center, at 1305 Columbia St., began organizing the stand-downs in 2012 as a way to expand its outreach. The nonprofit center is affiliated with the county’s Veterans Assistance Fund, which is part of Clark County Community Services.
