Non-league football: Mountain View 36, Bonney Lake 21

Preston Jones rushed for 183 yards and two touchdowns, and the Mountain View defense turned a struggling performance into a gem with a halftime adjustment in a win over Bonney Lake at McKenzie Stadium.

The Thunder (2-1) shut out the Panthers in the second half after giving up 288 yards and three touchdowns in the first half.

After taking a one-point lead into the break, the Thunder scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns to pull away from the Panthers.

The two teams combined for 529 yards of offense and 43 points in the first half.

Then both offenses did nothing in the third quarter.

Jones scored his second touchdown of the night with seven minutes left in the game to give Mountain View a 29-21 lead. Bonney Lake punted a couple minutes later, and the Thunder put it away on a 1-yard TD run from Austin Mace with three minutes to play.

Mace finished with 91 yards on 11 carries, and the Thunder gained 335 yards on the ground.

The lead changed six times in a wild first half.

Mountain View’s Will Warne connected on a short field goal to start the scoring. The Panthers took the lead moments later on a 48-yard TD pass from Isaiah Weed to Robert Combs.

Then Nicholas Wright scored on a 21-yard run for the Thunder.

Weed responded with a 1-yard TD run.

Mountain View’s Carl Falls found the end zone on a 5-yard run in the second quarter. The Panthers responded again to take a 21-15 lead, but Jones scored late in the first half, giving the Thunder a 22-21 advantage.

At the time, it did not appear the Panthers would be done scoring.

They were, and Mountain View cruised late for the victory.
