Letter: Debatable trade-off not worth risk

The Columbian
Published: November 19, 2013, 4:00pm

I serve as a commissioner for the Port of Camas-Washougal. We have a keen interest in preserving the quality of life and transportation access within our community. We cherish our position at the Gateway to the Gorge and envision knowledge-based businesses, recreation and tourism to be key pillars of economic growth. The proposed “pipeline on wheels” and “coal chute down the Gorge” are believed to pose enormous threats to the quality of life, traffic mobility and tourism potential of our communities.

The Tesoro-Savage proposal seems to be based on a huge misrepresentation. It makes no sense to route oil trains to Vancouver, reload oil on vessels and ship it to West Coast ports for refining. It is much more probable that this oil is destined for shipment to foreign nations, increasing the energy dependency of our country.

Tesoro and other petroleum companies are lobbying fiercely to change U.S. laws restricting the export of crude oil. There is concern with the impact of even the smallest accident. As a shipper, Tesoro has a woeful record of safety. Previous tank cars used and owned by Tesoro, did not meet U.S. Department of Transportation safety standards.

Are a few jobs worth the risk? A Faustian bargain?
