Camas turns on the jets for 85-38 win at Battle Ground

BATTLE GROUND — Camas completed an undefeated regular season with another runaway win, but not without tasting some playoff intensity.

Battle Ground quarterback Colston Vukanovich threw six touchdown passes, and the Tigers hung with the Papermakers into the third quarter before Camas pulled away for an 85-38 win at District Stadium on Friday.

Nate Beasley rushed for five touchdowns, and Zach Eagle scored three touchdowns for Camas. Beasley scored three of his in the third quarter, including two in the first two minutes after halftime on drives of 49 and 46 yards that were exclusively Beasley running plays.

Those drives turned a 49-32 halftime lead into a more comfortable 63-32 edge for the Papermakers.

It was a good playoff preview, Beasley said.

“The first half was definitely a playoff environment,” Beasley said. “Our starters played through the third quarter, and that was kind of out of the ordinary.”

Vukanovich threw three touchdowns apiece to Parker Randle and Colby Cahoon, the shortest of those covering 11 yards. Battle Ground finished with more than 500 yards of offense in a game that was shortened by a running clock after Camas went ahead by 40 late in the third quarter.

“That’s as fine of a quarterback performance as I’ve seen a Clark County kid have in 30 years of coaching,” Camas coach Jon Eagle said of Vukanovich’s play. “And, their receivers also made some tremendous plays and catches.”

Zach Eagle scored his touchdowns before halftime, the first of the game on a 60-yard punt return. In the second quarter he turned short pass plays into scores covering 50 and 65 yards. Those explosive plays allowed Camas to stay a step or two in front of Battle Ground.

“There’s no question they exposed some things that we need to be better at,” Jon Eagle said.

“It definitely showed a weak point that we need to improve on,” said Beasley, who plays safety on defense. “We’ve known that once a team like this came through it was going to be a challenge for us to deal with the with deep passes and quick passes.”
