A pedestrian was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries after he was hit by a tractor-trailer Monday afternoon in downtown Vancouver, police say. The accident occurred where Mill Plain Boulevard turns into East 15th Street and blocked westbound traffic on 15th for several hours.

The pedestrian’s name was not released.

Emergency personnel were dispatched to 470 E. 15th St. at 2:25 p.m.

A 25-year-old man crossed the street in front of a westbound tractor-trailer, which the driver was not able to stop in time, said Kim Kapp, spokeswoman for the Vancouver Police Department. The driver’s name was not released.

Witnesses provided aid to the man before emergency personnel arrived and took him to a hospital, Kapp said.

The driver and witnesses remained on the scene and cooperated with investigators.

East 15th Street was closed between Interstate 5 and C Street. The Washington State Patrol and the Washington State Department of Transportation assisted with traffic control.

Motorists taking the Mill Plain exit from I-5 weren’t able to head west for at least three to four hours, said Abbi Russell, WSDOT spokeswoman. Electronic signs on I-5 southbound at East Fourth Plain Boulevard and at Northeast 63rd Street warned motorists about the traffic diversion.

The Vancouver Police Department’s Traffic Unit is investigating.
