As smoke from Eastern Washington wildfires carries smoke west, 911 centers in Southwest Washington have been slammed with false fire reports.

Winds are moving smoke from Eastern Washington through the Columbia Gorge and Cascade Mountains into Western Washington, according to a Washington State Department of Natural Resources bulletin. People are calling to report smoke, thinking it’s from a new, active fire.

Over the next couple of days, there will be a buildup of smoke in the air from the Eastern Washington wildfires, the bulletin said. Although residents don’t need to report the presence of smoke in the air, they’re asked to call 911 or 800-562-6010 if they see columns of smoke.
