The Union wrestling team not only brought quantity to the Class 4A Region I tournament in Lake Stevens on Saturday, the Titans brought quality.
The Titans had 11 wrestlers clinch berths to next week’s 4A state tournament, including four regional champions, as Union captured the team title on Saturday.
“We brought 13 wrestlers up here, so to have 11 make it to state with one alternate is more than I expected,” Union coach John Godinho said. “And to go up and beat Lake Stevens in Lake Stevens is pretty good, too.”
Tyler Davis (132 pounds), JoJo Reynolds (152), Dillon Thomas (170) and D.J. Anderson (220) captured regional titles for Union. Bryson Page (195) had a runner-up finish.
Other Titans advancing to state were Daniel Rice (106), Cody Hershel (113), Junior Godinho (120), Sam Berry (138), Matt Rice (170) and Mason Proudfit (195).
Michael and Matthew Nguyen of Evergreen maintain their pursuit of state championships by winning regional titles, Michael at 113 pounds and Matthew at 120.
Other locals advance to state were Evergreen’s Ramon Ortiz (126), Tekwon Wallace (152), Austin Dunn (152), Anthony Thomas (160) and Austin Wright (285), Battle Ground’s Adam Peterson (138), Shawn Speer (145), and Juan Arellano (160), Heritage’s Devin Alder (182) and Ian Overton (285) and Skyview’s Riley Bockmier (220).
3A wrestling — Aaron Blaine of Hudson’s Bay and Prairie’s Cody Geary captured regional titles at the 3A Region III tournament at Bonney Lake.
Blaine beat James Bradley of Yelm 4-2 to win the title at 138 pounds, helping the Eagles place seventh in the team standings with 111 points.
Fellow Eagles Anniru Kamara (145 pounds) and Emilio Alcantar (152) also reached the finals and earned berths to state.
Geary beat Tyler Saichompoo of Timberline 7-1 in the final at 182 pounds. Prairie placed ninth as a team with 60 points.
Other local finalists included Tyler Weiss of Camas (132).
Also advancing to state were Camas wrestlers Bryan Elliott (106), Marcus Hartman (113) and Vince Huber (170), Hudson’s Bay wrestlers Gunnar Metzger (138) and Josh Ingebretson (285), Mountain View’s George Stoyanov (145), Luke Arterbury (160) and Sterling Reynolds (182), and Prairie’s Austen Fuller (195).
2A wrestling — Hockinson’s Cody Sheddy was the only local regional champion at the 2A Region II meet at Centralia.
Sheddy defeated W.F. West’s Geff Duncan 2-0 to capture the 132-pound division and advance to next week’s state meet.
Woodland qualified three wrestlers to the state tournament, the most in eight years.
Andrew Bosch led the Beavers with a runner-up finish at 106 pounds. Also advancing to state were Caleb Kaiser (132) and Nathan Patterson (138). Woodland placed eighth in the team standings. Also advancing to state was Hockinson’s Josiah Niemela at 160 pounds.
1A wrestling — Five local wrestlers took home regional title at the 1A regional meet at Castle Rock.
Ridgefield’s Casey Oviatt (106) and John White (220) won titles, as did Stevenson’s Karl Bell (145) and Alex McCrum (160) and La Center’s Patrick Mayolo (138).
Also advancing to state were Stevenson’s Tyler Miller (126), Jacob Schneider (138), Andrew Ledesma (152), Matt Maddux (170) and Marcus Carter (220), Ridgefield’s Clayton Farr (160) and La Center’s Dustin Veysey (132) and Josh McNeal (195)
Girls wrestling — Washougal advanced two wrestlers to state from the regional in Castle Rock. Haven Camden was a runner-up at 124 pounds, and Erin Locke placed third at 130.
