PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Voters in a Portland-area congressional district nominated Democratic state Sen. Suzanne Bonamici and Republican business consultant Rob Cornilles on Tuesday in the special election to replace Rep. David Wu, who resigned following a sex scandal.
Both candidates were heavily favored frontrunners. Cornilles defeated several lesser-known candidates to win the GOP nomination. Bonamici (BAHN’-uh-MEECH’-ee) defeated Labor Commissioner Brad Avakian, state Rep. Brad Witt and several lesser-known candidates to win the Democratic nomination.
The Portland-area district is the nation’s only vacant congressional district.
Wu resigned in August amid allegations he made an unwanted sexual advance on an 18-year-old woman
