The Washington Department of Ecology on Saturday continued to monitor a spill of bunker fuel from a ship taking on fuel Friday near Kelley Point at the confluence of the Willamette and Columbia rivers.

The spill occurred at about 11:30 a.m. Friday as the 590-foot vessel Transcenden Time was taking on fuel from an adjoining barge.

A U.S. Coast Guard spokesman reported that the fuel was being discharged out of an overflow pipe, then flowed over the deck and into the Willamette. The ship’s crew plugged the scuppers on deck to contain the spill, Petty Officer Shawn Eggert said Friday.
