Letter: Money better spent on schools

The new Vancouver Community Library officially opened July 17. If voters managed to pass a $38 million bond for this project, the next step must be for education. Many public schools in this area are in dire need of financial help. As an Evergreen High School graduate of 2010, I have a younger brother attending the school, where veteran teachers and essential programs are being cut.

I am a taxpayer, I am also a voter, and I think to spend $38 million on a new library doesn’t seem to be a great idea when schools could benefit from the extra help. I understand the former location was old, but it still allowed the public to access the same material that is found at the new location.

If that $38 million were used for the local public schools, the benefit would far exceed the opening of a new downtown library.
