Letter: Too much noise in libraries

I agree with Leora Gibson’s April 14 letter, “Treasure your library,” which said library staff are very helpful. I love the Fort Vancouver Regional Library system. I have been able to order books from other libraries. I have just one question for Gibson. What library did she go to where it was quiet? I have been at the Vancouver main library, the Cascade Park library and the library at the mall. All three are noisy. From screaming children to loud teenagers and homeless people. From people talking on their cell phones to those playing music from the computers with the volume up so high that people can hear it from two computers away. This is happening when they have ear plugs in, so they are not supposed to disturb their neighbors.

Even some of the librarians talk in a loud voice. I once asked a librarian about the noise level. She said it was against the people’s civil rights to ask them to talk in a quieter voice. What about the people who come to the library for quiet time? Don’t we get rights, too? Do we have to be bombarded with noise in the library? We are already bombarded with noise pollution everywhere else in our daily lives.
