Husband-and-wife team Carolyn J. Rose and Mike Nettleton have written several mystery and suspense books. But the Vancouver couple recently lent their talents to another project: a cookbook.
Rose first heard about “Killer Recipes,” compiled by Susan Whitfield, on an Internet message board for mystery writers about a year ago.
The book would be made up of recipes with frightful-sounding names and would raise funds for the American Cancer Society.
Rose thought it sounded like a fun project, but the cause hit close to home. Rose’s father died of lymphoma, and the couple have several friends who are battling other forms of cancer. “You do it to help out,” she said.
Four of Rose and Nettleton’s contributions made it into “Killer Recipes,” including recipes for chicken green-chili casserole, scones, garlic zucchini potato pancakes and stuffed mushrooms.
“When the spirit moves me, I cook, so I contributed the favorite things that I like to make,” she said.
Rose, 62, is especially fond of the Chicken Green-Chili Casserole recipe she contributed.
“It takes awhile to make, but it’s so good,” she said. “Plus, it’s filled with stuff I shouldn’t have.”
“Killer Recipes” is available at Cover to Cover Books in downtown Vancouver and through online retailers such as Amazon.com.
Artist carves a niche
Scroll-saw artist Terry Foltz of Battle Ground has created 29 pieces of artwork that will serve as trophies at the National Beagle Club of America specialty show Oct. 6-8 in Vancouver.
An organizer of the show commissioned Foltz after spotting his artwork at Alder Creek Veterinary Clinic in Battle Ground.
Foltz, 65, first picked up a scroll saw 10 years ago after retiring from his job as manager of a food manufacturing plant. His uncle had an extra scroll saw and passed it along to Foltz.
“I had never done it before in my life,” he said. “I started piddling with it, and it evolved.”
The White Sturgeon Art Gallery at Vancouver’s Water Resources Education Center plans an exhibit of Foltz’s work later this year.
Bits ’n’ Pieces appears Mondays and Fridays. If you have a story you’d like to share, call Courtney Sherwood 360-735-4561, or e-mail features@columbian.com.
