A week after Washougal resident Walt Ratterman was reported missing in Haiti’s devastating earthquake, his family has been encouraged by reports of tapping coming from inside the rubble.

“The tapping is still going on,” Jeanne Ratterman said Tuesday evening.

Her husband was in the capital city of Port-au-Prince as part of a solar-energy project. The last time his family heard from him, Ratterman was in the Hotel Montana just a few minutes before it was destroyed by the quake.

Rescue teams using acoustic equipment picked up the sounds of tapping, which indicate that people are still alive under the rubble.

An update posted by the family on Ratterman’s Facebook page Tuesday said that the search was going to continue through the night.
