SEATTLE (AP) — The Mercer Island High School marching band has been busy practicing during the holiday break on streets near the school.

The large band — about 200 members — is flying to London take part in the televised New Year’s Day parade through Piccadilly Circus and Trafalgar Square.

At the suburban Seattle school, nearly one in every five students is in the band. The Seattle Times reports anyone who meets minimum playing requirements can join.

Band Director Parker Bixby says students and supporters raised $80,000 to cover costs for students who couldn’t afford the London trip.

The band also is looking ahead to playing in the 2012 Rose Bowl parade in Pasadena, Calif.
