Youth ball: Cascade all-stars play first game of regional

Host team Cascade Little League gets into the act today with its first game of the Little League Softball Western Regional.

The District 4 champs had a two-day bye at the tournament at Fort Vancouver Little League.

Cascade will face defending champion Anchorage at 6 p.m. today. It is the nightcap of the three games scheduled for today.

Admission to all games is free.

In Sunday’s action, the Northern California champ from Gilroy, Calif., improved to 2-0 in pool play with an 8-1 win over High Desert of Anthem, Ariz.

Billings, Mont., won its opening game 9-3 over Washington state champion East Jefferson of Chimacum.

In another opener, Burbank, Calif., defeated Pendleton, Ore., 5-1.

Pool play continues through Friday. The semifinals are Saturday and the final next Sunday.

The champion advances to the Little League Softball World Series at Alpenrose Dairy in southwest Portland.

The Hazel Dell Metro 14-year-old all-stars begin play today in Lewiston, Idaho., as the Pacific Northwest Regional gets under way at Harris Field on the Lewis-Clark State College campus.

Hazel Dell Metro opens pool play against the champs from British Columbia at noon.

Hazel Dell Metro has a bye on Tuesday. The next opponent is the North Oregon champion at noon on Wednesday.

Pool play continues on Thursday with a 9 a.m. game against Alberta, and wraps up with a 3 p.m. game against host Lewiston on Friday.

The top two teams from each pool move into Saturday’s semifinal and final round.

The tournament champion earns a spot in the 14-year-old World Series at Loudoun County, Va., beginning Aug. 21.
