Challenge: One tank or bust
Wednesday, July 23, 2008 By The ColumbianWhen Danni Brancaccio returned home from college on break she was excited about her summer job as a clerk for the Portland law firm Davis Wright Tremaine.
Like most of us, the 20-year-old Northwestern University student, daughter of Columbian editor Lou Brancaccio, dreaded paying the high price of gas for her daily commute from Salmon Creek to Portland. She was always environmentally conscious during her high school years at Vancouver School of Arts and Academics. That has continued. And it was there where she also learned how important it was to set goals.
So, she set a goal. Use only one full tank of gas in her 1997 Honda Civic. For the entire summer! With a commute to Portland five days a week for work, regular visits with high school friends and other normal out-and-about needs, could her 12-gallon gas tank get her there?
