Oscar Bauman of Vancouver won the Erik Anderson Memorial Frenchman’s Bar 3-mile run on June 17 with a time of 15 minutes and 32 seconds.
The event, part of the Clark County Running Club’s series of Wednesday evening summer runs, drew a record number of participants and raised $1,400 for the family of Anderson. A total of 239 runners completed the race.
Anderson, a former Clark College cross country coach, died Feb. 19 in an accident in Spokane.
Russ Zornick, president of the Clark County Running Club, said the club will accept donations for the Anderson family at this Wednesday’s Heritage Trail 3-mile Run, which starts at 7 p.m. from the boat ramp parking area near the Moose Lodge on the southeast corner of Lacamas Lake.
The Washington Soccer Academy F.C. Vancouver Glory girls soccer team became the second team from Clark County to reach the elimination phase of the U.S. Youth Soccer Far West Regional Tournament when it advanced to the quarterfinals last week at Lancaster, Calif.
The Alaska state champions scored 15 minutes after halftime on a shot from 25 yards, and won Friday’s quarterfinal, 1-0. Glory coach Todd Miles said his team created a number of scoring chances after falling behind.
Arsenal FC won the girls under-12 regional title, one of the nine California South teams to win regional titles last week. Crossfire Premier from the Puget Sound area won the girls under-17 crown, the only team from Washington to bring home a regional title.
At least one player from Clark County had a championship experience at the regionals. Camas’ Quinton Beasley plays for the Westside Metros International team that won the Far West Region championship for the boys under-18 age group.
Beasley, who plans to play soccer for the Washington Huskies beginning in August, joined the Beaverton-based team this year. The regional title qualifies the Metros team for the U.S. Youth Soccer national championship tournament, scheduled for July 21-26 in Lancaster, Mass.
Vancouver police officer Julie Ballou lost by decision in her amateur boxing debut on June 11 in Tacoma. Ballou fought a firefighter in one of the matches during a Guns and Hoses charity event at the Emerald Queen Casino.
Ballou said the experience was more intense than she expected, and that competing in front of 1,200 fans was a bit unnerving.
"It was a great experience and I had such a good time," Ballou said. "My opponent was much tougher than I expected and we gave the crowd a great fight" that brought the crowd to its feet.
Holly Boucher, another Vancouver police officer who was scheduled to participate, was one of several scheduled Guns and Hoses fighters who could not be matched with an opponent of equal weight and experience.
Ballou said she and Boucher both will consider fighting in another Guns and Hoses fundraiser in the fall. First, she plans to train for a sprint triathlon while continuing to train at boxing.
The Tacoma News Tribune newspaper reported that the event raised more than $42,000 for Puget Sound area charities, according to the organizer of the event.
