Local YMCA joins effort to help military families
The YMCA of Clark County has joined a national initiative to support military families.
The YMCA at 11342 N.E. 51st Circle will provide military families with access to youth development, family strengthening, and health and wellness programs. Membership fees will be underwritten by the Department of Defense.
Those eligible include: families of joint-deployed National Guard and Reserves of all military branches; families living in newly established Joint Base Realignment and Closure bases; active duty independent duty station personnel and their families; and relocated spouses and family members of deployed active duty personnel.

Candlelight vigil honors memory of slain girl, 14
A candlelight vigil in memory of Chelsea Harrison is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, at the Vancouver Police Department’s east precinct, 520 S.E. 155th Ave.
Harrison, 14, an Evergreen High School freshman, was murdered Nov. 2, 2005, by Roy Wayne Russell.
He is serving a life sentence in prison.
Participants are encouraged to bring a non-perishable item to be donated in Harrison’s memory.

Book on Clark College’s anniversary available
Copies of the commemorative book “Voices and Dreams: Celebrating Clark College’s Diamond Anniversary” remain on sale for half-price through Wednesday at the main campus bookstore.
The special 75th anniversary edition, which includes many alumni stories, is priced at $7.50.
After Wednesday, it will be available at its regular price, $15. All proceeds benefit the Clark College Alumni Association Scholarship fund.
Clark is located at 1933 Fort Vancouver Way, with the bookstore in the remodeled Gaiser Hall. Bookstore hours are 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays.

Sewer project will tear up section of Mill Plain
Construction begins Monday on a project to install about 1,960 feet of 8-inch sewer line along East Mill Plain Boulevard between 87th and 90th avenues near Southwest Washington Medical Center.
The $292,000 project will provide public sewer service to 31 single-family residences in the area.
Motorists should be alert to lane shifts and closures along Mill Plain, as well as a short section of busy Northeast 87th Avenue and about 400 feet of 89th Avenue south of Mill Plain. Work hours are 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The project should be finished by December.
